This is a short 2.5km circular walk that takes you past some of the historical buildings of Pontyclun. The walk follows paths and pavements and is fairly level. At regular points along the way there are signs with historical information for you to read.
This path starts by the Community centre which has been at the heart of Pontyclun since the 1930s when it was first built by unemployed locals. Off down Heol yr Orsaf through the playground and to where it all began in Pontyclun, at the Railway Station. The first station was opened in June 1850 as part of the main line of South Wales. It quickly grew to be a very busy junction with maintenance yards.
Walk up Station Terrace to the main road where you turn left over the railway bridge. In this area there are three pubs dating back to the Victorian era.
Go along Heol Llantisant for about 400m until you reach St Paul’s Church, carry on and turn right at the small roundabout. This area is quite religious with Bethel Church on the left as well.
Continue along this road until you reach the junction with Clun Avenue and turn right here. Just past the allotments turn left into the Rugby fields and follow the path past the Rugby club and back to the main road again near the Windsor pub.
Turn left here and go over the 19th century railway bridge into the town centre. About 100m after the bridge, turn left into Cerdin Avenue, past Hope and then take the second right into Derwen Road and then right again into Palalwyf Avenue. You will now have walked around the ‘Ath‘ as it is known locally. This is a sports and social club given to the Community by the Clark family over 100 years ago and was used in the First World War as a hospital for injured soldiers.
Continue down to the main road and turn left. When you reach Heol y Felin, you have the option to turn left and look at the primary school that was built first in the 1920s. Unfortunately, following a major rebuild when it was 100 years old, nothing remains of the original school. Soon after Heol y Felin, you will reach the Pontyclun War Memorial. As you head back towards the Town, look at the lovely Masonic hall from the 1930s and go to the Town Centre. You are very welcome to shop here and there are many good places to get refreshments.
If you turn left at the crossroads where Giles Gallery is you will return to the Community Centre where you started
