Starting in the historic centre of Miskin head out along School street past St David’s Church and up to the right turn into the Chestnuts. If you want to carry of for about 150m you can see Miskin’s Victorian primary school (now converted to flats) but our walk goes into the Chestnuts and up the hill.
Shortly after the crest take the footpath on the left into a field. Follow this path through a gate and along the side of the hillside. After a bit keep going up the rise to a gap in the trees.
In the trees to the right lies the ruins of what is known as St Cawdraf’s monastery. This may be an mediaeval manor house but could equally be a fake created by Iolo Morgannwg in the late 18th century. Keep going along the path till you reach the road and cross over into the field opposite.
Walk along the left-hand side of the fields go through the path in the trees. Just when you come out there is a standing stone on your right. This was moved here during the nearby construction of the M4.
Keep going along the left of the field and then cross over to the far right where you will find a kissing gate behind a large oak. Go right onto the lane and past the conference centre and Miskin Manor.
Take the footpath past the cottages and into the trees. This route was the original “drive” into the house from Miskin.
When the path comes out from the trees you go past Miskin Manor Cricket Club. Carry on along the path and up through the housing estate until the very top. Through the lane to the left of the garage and back to the centre of Miskin.
