This trail starts at St David’s church in Groesfaen. This lies on the historic Penrhys Pilgrimage route, and you can find the base of what is reputed to be one of the route waymarking crosses here.
Leave the churchyard via the back exit onto the lane and turn right. The thatched house here is probably the oldest building in the village.
When you reach the main road turn left and go past the War Memorial bus shelter and then go left down the footpath that follows the lane. Follow the footpath through some fields and trees bearing left until you reach the road at a stile.
If you went left down the lane this would take you to Miskin manor and the field to the left of this lane have remains of medieval field workings in them. We are going the other way up the lane until it reaches the main road.
Go left at this point until the Castell Mynach pub. Turn right and keep going to the traffic lights by the garage. At the far end of the fields here lies Mwyndy house a excellent example of a Georgian country house.
Cross the road at the lights and carry on past the garage to the stile at the corner of small group of trees. Go into the trees and follow the path up through and out onto the road again by BETS. In the late 18th Century this area was the centre of the Bute Iron Ore works.
Go right following the road until you reach the main road and cross over, turning right back towards the garage again. Before you get there turn left into the side road. This will take you past the old Barn pub. Opposite are Mwyndy Pits which has been the site of iron workings since at least Tudor times. There is even evidence of Roman working here.
Keep going past the small units and then turn right along the footpath using the lane to the rear of Leekes. Follow this lane and then go off right when the footpath diverts and follow the path up through fields until it comes out at the main road at Groesfaen.
Go left along the main road into Groesfaen past Babell Chapel back to the War Memorial bus shelter and back to the Church.
