Residents may have seen or heard about the recent BBC documentary regarding contaminated sites across Wales
As two sites mentioned were in the RCT Council area we asked them for comment and here is the reply we received
"For context, further information regarding our role in respect of contaminated land sites is set out in our Contaminated Land Inspection Strategy available on our website: Contaminated land | Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council
I understand the concerns that people may have about the documentary recently shown on the BBC. I can confirm that this Council has no record of being approached for comment by the producers although we were aware that the programme was being made.
In terms of the Council's position with respect to the quarries in your locality, in line with previous public statements, I can confirm:
"The Brofiscin site was determined as contaminated land and designated as a Special Site in March 2005 by the Council due to pollution of the water environment. As a Special Site, Natural Resources Wales (NRW) became the regulatory authority responsible for ensuring that the required remediation of the quarry was undertaken. NRW and the Council worked closely together to ensure that the Brofiscin site was thoroughly investigated and remediation of the site was secured and at this time, it is not considered that any further work is required in relation to the site."
"The Maendy Quarry site is privately owned by a company. As a private site, the overall responsibility lies with the said landowner, however the Local Authority recognises that it has previous land use that could support the possible need for future investigation under Part 2A, Environmental Protection Act, 1990. Our current approach is to continue working with the site owners, who have undertaken investigations to inform improvement works, and with NRW in respect of compliance with the current Environmental Permit issued and enforced by NRW"
"As is the case with many Local Authorities across Wales and the UK there are numerous potential contaminated land sites within our County Borough and alongside the site at Maendy Quarry, they are subject to prioritisation in accordance with the Council's Contaminated Land Inspection Strategy (CLIS). Any decision to investigate a potential contaminated land site would be in accordance with Statutory Guidance, the Council's CLIS and the availability of appropriate funding".
