Arthur Howard Williams  is a legendary figure in Welsh chess, distinguished by a career that spans over five decades of competitive dominance. A FIDE Master (FM), he is most renowned for winning the Welsh Chess Championship a record-breaking 18 times between 1968 and 2011, establishing himself as the premier player in the nation's history.

Williams achieved significant international recognition early on, becoming the first Welsh player to surpass a FIDE rating of 2400 and nearly claiming the British Chess Championship in 1974, where he finished in a tie for first place.

Beyond his over-the-board achievements, which include representing Wales in numerous Chess Olympiads, he has contributed to the game's theory as a co-author of a definitive monograph on Alekhine's Defense.
